"Anytime you're using the same system, the same terminology, the guys can go out there and compete at a higher level," said Wasden of the effect the staff's continuity could have on the team. The offensive coaching staff remains intact. Former graduate assistant Jordan Cagle is the new defensive line coach. Rob Gray returns to Faulkner to coach defensive backs, which were under Goodrum's purview. Wasden promoted internally to fill the role, as Bernard Goodrum was given sole defensive coordinator status and the job of coaching linebackers. Now, only one coach has not remained on staff for this year, as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Justin Lucas left to take a position at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. In Year Two, though, the program now sees a level of consistency in its coaching ranks, a luxury it has not had in recent years, as Wasden was the Eagles' third head coach in as many seasons following Charlie Boren's and Wasden's brother Shayne's resignations. "So we're looking forward to that as well."įaulkner is coming off a disappointing 3-6 finish in Wasden's first year as coach, though all of the wins were by at least 19 points. "And, while it's odd to be playing in the spring, we're excited about it from the standpoint of, we're going to get a little more football weather, you know, instead of being 100 degrees on the turf out there! We're going to get a little cold weather," Wasden said. But we've put in a lot of time and a lot of effort, and the guys are really excited."Īs the Eagles stepped into game prep this week, Wasden could hardly contain the excitement. So, we've been practicing against ourselves for almost a year. In the fall, we call it 'sprall ball,' so we were doing spring training in fall. We've practiced, in the spring, we did drills. "The guys are extremely excited about getting the opportunity to play again. "So, we haven't played a football game in over a year now," said Faulkner Head Coach Tommy Wasden, entering his second year at the helm of the program. Now, here we are: the Faulkner Eagles will take the field Saturday for potentially the first of two seasons in one calendar year. The Mid-South Conference's Appalachian and Bluegrass divisions followed many other conferences at various levels in August when they moved their schedule to the spring. COVID-19 has altered the sports landscape greatly with cancellations and postponed games all throughout the calendar since the shutdown almost a year ago. Brady has been in pressure situations too many times in his career, and his team's versatile attack will put pressure on the Eagles for 60 minutes. It's time for football season again at Faulkner University! Yes, in the spring. Fletcher Cox added 5.5 sacks, while Chris Long and Derek Barnett added 5.0 sacks each.Īs strong as the Philadelphia defense is, it's difficult to imagine the Eagles holding Tom Brady and the New England offense in check. The Eagles ranked fourth in yards allowed, and they have been able to launch a consistent pass rush throughout the season.ĭefensive end Brandon Graham is Philadelphia's best pass-rusher, and he had 9.5 sacks during the regular season. Philadelphia clearly has a much better and more impactful defense than the Patriots. They have allowed 17 points or fewer in 11 of their last 14 games. New England was awful on defense through the first four games of the season, but they have been more efficient since then. The Vikings had the top-ranked defense in the league this year, and since the Eagles were able to move the ball efficiently and consistently against that impressive unit, what will they be able to do against the 28th-ranked defense in the league? He threw for 352 yards and had three TD passes. Quarterback Nick Foles was a major force in the 38-7 blowout win over the Vikings in the conference championship game. The Eagles have played impressively on the offensive side in their playoff victories over the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings. Both sides should be able to move the ball with some regularity.
